Travel insurance for your vacation

Before you go travelling, it's wise to buy travel insurance for your trip as well. The best idea usually is go for some travelers insurance company near you. There should be tons of travel insurance providers in every country and you'll just need to choose the best one that fits your need.

Travel insurance plans can vary a lot - what coverage it offers, for how long trip it's for, how much it costs, active vacation coverage and so on. But the basics usually remail the same, travel insurance is needed to cover any emergency medical expenses, lost (or stolen) luggage, trip delays or cancellation.

What to look for in travel insurance?

Most providers offer it all, but you might want to make sure that at least these minimums are provided by your insurer - emergency medical coverage (including dental), flight back home coverage should you get really sick, cancellation coverage, missed departure coverage, long delay coverage; lost, stolen, damaged baggage coverage, and also personal liability cover just in case.

More things to keep in mind

As you might have guessed, it often pays to read the small prints or make sure you ask the right questions before buying your travel insurance, considering travel insurance companies often 'forget' to tell you a few things upfront. For example, when we talk about stolen bags and such, often they are only covered IF you keep your laptop in your hotel room's safe. None of us actually do that, do we? Another things to check - do you plan to do any sports during your trip? If you are, be sure to check the small prints about that. While some companies and packages include everything, some plans might not even cover your usual daily runs.

Single or recurring?

Some companies are offering recurring yearly plans. This means that you pay for it every year, and depending on the exact plan, it allows you to go travelling as many times a year you want to up to X days at a time. If you're travelling frequently, this is usually a good option. Especially considering the cost for the plan for a month, and the cost for a plan for a year with unlimited trips with a length of up to one month, could be almost the same.

One more thing - for Europeans

If you're a European citizen, you should also make sure you have European Health Insurance Card offered in every EU country. It is 'free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 28 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country.
